In the
Tigers’ first game of the season and their first under their new
head-coach it was clear everybody wanted to get off to successful start
and get points on the board as early as possible. They were made to wait
however as after winning the toss the first chance to put points on the
board fell to the Hornets. A combination of excellent defence from the
Tigers and a succession of penalties from the Hornets saw the Tigers
take over on offence with the score at 0-0. It took only two plays for
QB Alan Steen to connect with David Fallon in the endzone for the
opening points of the game. A successful 2-point attempt by Nick
Halfpenny put the Tigers 8 points clear.
The Hornets again failed to
trouble the Tigers’ defence which and the Tigers were quickly back in
possession. The Tigers moved the ball downfield once more, this time it
was WR Andrew ‘Nigel’ Burns doing the damage and making the catch for
the TD. The unsuccessful 2-point attempt left the score at 14-0.
The Hornets however did not give
up easily and managed to move the ball on the Tigers coming away with 6
points from their next possession, narrowing the score line to 14-6.
This didn’t faze the Tigers who ran in another two touchdowns, the first
from ‘Nigel’ and the second from David Fallon, and a 2-point conversion
from Nick Halfpenny before halftime giving them a comfortable 28-6
lead.
The Tigers showed no complacency
and came out scoring at the start of the second half. This time it was
Scott McIntosh on the receiving end of another accurate pass from Alan
Steen. David Fallon added the 2-point conversion taking the score to
36-6.
With the gap at 30 points the
Hornets offence found a spark and a long run saw them scoring for the
second time in the game. They couldn’t duplicate that form on the PAT,
leaving the score at 36-12.
The Tigers scored 7 points on
their next possession with another TD from ‘Nigel’ taking his tally to 3
for the day. David Fallon made his fourth successful trip of the day
into the endzone to add the 1-point conversion.
An interception by the Tigers’
Defence ended any hopes the Hornets had of scoring on their next
possession and set up great field position for Nick Halfpenny to score
his first TD of the game. This gave the Tigers a 39-point lead and the
Hornets were offered the mercy-rule, which they refused. The game
continued and Alan Steen passed to ‘Nigel’ to socre on the 2-point
attempt.
The Hornets managed a
consolation score before Scott McIntosh scored and converted the last TD
of the game to make the final score Tigers 59 Hornets 18.
MVP awards were given to Marc
Donald for his exemplary performance on defence and Alan Steen for his
excellent performance at QB.
