GAME:

4th August 2007

Cadets

Glasgow Tigers 22 - 18 Clyde Valley Predators

SQUAD:

Adam Donald, Josh Fletcher, Brian O’Connor, Darren O’Connor and Liam O’Connor.

REPORT:

Game MVP Brian O’Connor  (picked by Predators)
The Predators opened in offence, but the Tigers defence caused them problems stopping them short of a first down.

The Tigers replied in their first possession. A series of short passes and runs moved them steadily nearer the half way line, when on a handoff to Adam, found him with space to run it in from 26yrds for the TD. However, the Tigers narrowly failed to convert on a 2 PAT.

Some good defensive work from both sides saw the score remain the same for the next two possessions. On the Tigers next possession they secured the first down off a run from Josh. Unfortunately on the next play, on a deep pass intended for Josh, the Predators intercepted the ball. A good recovery tackle from Josh, and a series of forced offensive errors saw the Predators pinned close to their own goal line. On their next play, a sweep play, Josh made the tackle for a 2Pt Safety.

On our next possession a combination of passes and runs saw us creep ever closer to the end zone. On third down Brian connected with Josh on a 3Yrd pass for the TD. Adam ran in the 2 PAT. This left only 3 seconds on the clock and it was obvious from the snap that the Predators were going for it. The Tigers marked out their danger men, but their QB connected with their smallest and newest player #52 Patterson, for a superb touchdown. Despite the ball hitting off his face he managed to pull it in and hit the ground with the ball under control.

Half Time: Tigers 16 Predators 6

The Tigers opened the 2nd half on offence but a series of penalties and some nervous play, saw them fall out of rhythm. The Predators, especially Winters, began to make the important reads and tackles and the Tigers failed to make any progress.  This remained the case for both sides on the next two possessions, before the Predators secured an important first down on the final attempt. They moved it quickly on a deep pass and managed to score through McCrum but failed on the 1 PAT.

The Tigers switched tactics again and began to claw their way forward, before Brain connected with Adam on a 26 Yrd pass for the TD. Brian was stopped just short of the end zone on the failed 2 PAT attempt.

The Predators again found the going tough against the Tigers defence, but once again managed to pull off the first down on the final attempt.   Some great running from Winter saw them stopped just short of the endzone, but they converted to Patterson on a short 2Yrd pass. The 1 PAT attempt was deflected away by Josh. The Tigers took possession with just over a minute on the clock and slowly moved the ball. Adam found space and was stopped just short of the end zone. A defensive penalty was declined and with just 12 seconds on the clock the Tigers were desperate to add to the score. Josh was stopped inches from the line on the next play, before time ran out on a miscalled Timeout from the Predators.

Final score: Tigers 22 Predators 18

COACHES COMMENTS:

This match saw the Tigers secure an important win over their group rivals. Going into the match the players knew they had to win this game if they were to keep their hopes of reaching Finals Day alive, and they did just enough over a team that is always difficult to beat and has a number of talented players in its squad. The Tigers stuck to the game plan and made a serious of adjustments to finally secure victory in a closely contested game. Both teams made some basic errors in what proved to be a nervy encounter.

I was encouraged to see Brain secure the MVP, despite struggling to find a rhythm, but for me our best player was Josh, who ran himself into the ground for his team on both sides of the ball and was unlucky on a couple of occasions not to come away with an interception. Adam had a good game but gave away a few offensive penalties for moving and was clearly annoyed at himself on the Predators first touchdown.  Offensively, Josh and Adam may have done all the scoring but everyone got a touch of the ball and Brian was unlucky not to get a touchdown off an option play. Defensively the Tigers were solid but after containing the Predators so well on the first three downs got caught a couple of times on fourth. Darren made a couple of very important tackles in the game and Liam’s blitzing put their QB under pressure to help close them out in the later part.

This proved to be a very closely fought contest that could have gone either way at the end. All credit to the Predators who made adjustments to our play and began to exploit gaps in our coverage. Before the game we knew they would want to win at home, and had the players to do so. This was an important result for the Tigers and we even managed to find some sunshine!

The Predators #52, Adam Patterson, was the Referee’s MVP choice, which was well deserved. The Predators gave their MVP to Brian O’Connor and the Tigers MVP Nomination went to Grant Winter, who began stopping the Tigers in the second half with a series of good reads and great tackling and he proved an offensive threat with his penetrating runs.
